My furnishings are constructed from solid American hard and softwoods. Primarily maple, aspen, staghorn sumac and cedar. Most is found right here, locally, in the forests of northern Michigan. The woods I use are what might end up in the woodpile or rotting on the ground if not given new life by myself or someone else. Larger pieces (tabletops for example) are sometimes brought in from outside of the area if the right piece cannot be found locally. I personally hand select all the woods used in my items for color, stability, and suitability to each individual piece. Knots, splits, checking and insect tracks are all part of the rustic charm and are not considered defects; in fact, they are actively sought out and valued in rustic woodworking, and do not diminish structural integrity.

The majority of my furniture is constructed using the time-honored tradition of mortise and tenon joinery. Glue is added to the mortise and tenon, clamps are used to apply pressure, and the resulting joint is actually stronger than the wood surrounding it.

For the finish of most of my furnishings, several coats of a special non-toxic, natural, Danish oil/beeswax mixture are hand rubbed into the piece; giving it a warm, antique-like glow that accentuates the beautiful color and grain of the wood, while at the same time protecting and preserving it. This type of finish actually seeps into the wood, then hardens and protects it from the inside out. It is a labor intensive method of finishing, but the results, I feel, are well worth the extra effort. Some species of wood do not readily accept an oil finish, or may require extra protection (tabletops for instance) on these I will use lacquer or a varnish mixture.

Pieces intended for use outdoors are given several coats of a high grade, clear exterior stain that offers UV protection. Areas that will come in contact with the ground are waterproofed to retard the chance of rotting. It is recommended they be stored indoors during the winter months in colder regions, or at least covered well and protected from the elements. Items may be purchased without finish if requested beforehand.
